Product Specific Emissions: PCF, LCA, & CBAM
Understanding and quantifying emissions are critical to minimize environmental impacts. Emissions typically refer to gases and other substances that are released to the air, and product specific emissions are those emissions that are associated with a product. Three relevant methodologies that exist to quantify product specific emissions that this article will focus on are product carbon footprints (PCF), life cycle assessments (LCA), and the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM). These methods provide a systematic and consistent way of measuring the emissions of a product using fundamental science-based principles. LCA’s and PCF’s can be applied to any product and are not mandated by law, whereas the CBAM methodology is currently only applied to a specified list of CBAM goods and its application is mandated by European law to importers of those goods into the EU. This begs the question, why perform an LCA or PCF if it is not mandated by law?
